Our camps are held across the US, offering a three day firearms training program for novice women who have little (or zero) handgun experience. We also offer camps for women who have some handgun experience along with “combo” camps to introduce women to the handling of an AR-15 rifle. Every camp is taught by women who are national and world firearms champions with Kay Miculek as the head instructor.

The Babes with Bullets ™ camps started in 2004 at the Louisiana home range of head instructor, Kay Clark Miculek. Deb Ferns, camp director, was one of the original students in 2004. There are now over 1,800 camper alumnae. Students include women who have never touched a gun and span to women who are already competing in some type of shooting sports activities. The age span of campers has stretched from 16 to 78.

Many of the students come alone, though by the end of camp, it never fails that each has made a host of new friends! According to Deb Ferns, camp director, the camps are “1/3 firearms training, 1/3 adventure camp, and 1/3 pajama party!” A more complete description of the camps are available at About Camp. Thanks to camp sponsor Smith & Wesson for donating the rifles! A new addition to the Camp lineup, the Rifle camp gives students hands on, basic instruction in shooting the modern sporting rifle or AR-15 commonly used in 3 Gun or Multi-Gun competitions held across the United States. Taught by Kay Clark Miculek, a 14 time National Champion, these camps have students shooting from a variety of positions. Most commonly standing, kneeling and prone postitions are used while navigating barricades. Rifle camp is held at the end of handgun camp. Beginning students start out with .22 caliber rifles and advance to .223 rifles as they progress.

Students are taught shooting from prone and using barricades for support.

Smith & Wesson

Since the camps started in April 2004 it has been Smith & Wesson that stepped forward with financial support so that women could attend camp at a discounted price. Smith & Wesson also provides all the loaner equipment in both handguns and rifles so that campers attending who do not have a gun have the opportunity to “try before they buy.”

Having both S&W handguns (.22 caliber along with the .9mm M&P) and also S&W rifles (.22 caliber and .223 caliber) is invaluable! Even if a woman owns her own firearm quite often if traveling by air to the camp she will not want to bring her gun along. This gives women an option of coming with their own gun or using one of the S&W “loaner” guns.

Besides their financial support, OTIS Technology also donates their OTIS Elite package (a very upscale cleaning system for pistols, rifles and shotguns) for each camp. This package, along with a tiara, is awarded to a novice camper who has the best group of six shots by the end of the second day at camp. This much enjoyed camp experience is now called the “OTIS Novice Group Goddess” shoot-off.

Beginning in 2010 a “Babes” training camp is now offered to OTIS female employees each summer utilizing the Lucky Star Ranch (owned by OTIS) in upstate New York. United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) is a Gold Sponsor for Babes with Bullets ™. Their financial support to assist our instructors with airfare to the various regions across the US has allowed our program to continue recruiting the top female firearms champions. USPSA also allows us to sign up our campers for an annual membership at a discounted rate. Each student leaving camp will receive the bi-monthly Front Sight magazine and receive a USPSA membership card.

As we added the AR-15 rifle camp to our firearms training program in 2010, John Paul, owner of JP Rifles, donated a variety of products for our S&W camp rifles, specifically his world acclaimed trigger unit. Some people would say we really go all out to make sure that every firearm our campers touch are “user friendly” and they would be right!

A firearm that is easy for our novice women to use, including top of the line triggers, makes their camp experience that much more successful. JP Enterprise also donated one of their world acclaimed AR-15 rifles to be auctioned off in 2011. A portion of the proceeds from the JP rifle will be used for additional rifle camp scholarships.
