Other than we were both born in Michigan, I have very little in common with Madonna. So it was kind of surprising when I read a series of interviews on her and came away with a whole new impression of this “mega star.” Long story made short, Madonna is a smart marketing gal who has successfully reinvented herself more times in a tough entertainment industry then you or I could count on our hands (or feet for that matter.) That she has continued her long success over decades without us constantly reading about her in drug or alcohol rehab, must be some kind of Hollywood miracle! There were three “sound bites” from Madonna that I want to share with you.
Madonna Sound Bite Number 1: “I stand for freedom of expression, doing what you believe in, and going after your dreams.” Now I don’t profess to know Madonna’s stance on 2nd Amendment issues, but she obviously believes in 1st Amendment issues pertaining to freedom of speech (expression implied.) Common sense leads me to figure that if a person believes in the 1st Amendment that deep down they must know that American citizens only get the 1st Amendment because they have the 2nd Amendment to back it up. I also agree with Madonna that you have to believe in what you are doing and trying to “fake it” just doesn’t work in the long run. I’ll share with you some beliefs that are fundamental for me personally. I believe in God as Number 1. I believe that we (my daughters and I) are blessed to be women in America. I believe in the purpose of our Babes with Bullets camps along with the Women’s Outdoor Media Association. I think these beliefs are what give me the energy and drive to pursue my dreams.
Madonna Sound Bite Number 2: “A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That’s why they don’t get what they want.” Obviously Madonna hasn’t been afraid to go after what she wants and while I may not agree with her methods, I can’t deny her success. Those of you who know me personally might say I’m a bit boisterous and tenacious (and aren’t those nicer words than loud and pushy?) Living your life afraid to question the status quo or more importantly afraid to stand up for what you believe in is, at least in my mind, a denial of your spending quality time here on earth. Now repeat after me “life is not a dress rehearsal, life is not a dress rehearsal.”
Madonna Sound Bite Number 3: “Better to live one year as a tiger than a hundred as a sheep.” And to that final quote, I herald out a big AMEN! It may not have been comfortable for me to start shooting multigun competitions in my 50’s but by golly I’m giving it a try. Is there an area in your life where you let things slide by when you know you should be trying harder or reacting more vigorously; maybe something as ordinary as taking a junior or woman to the gun range to teach them firearm safety? Don’t be passive like a sheep, think like a tiger and get the job done!
